Kayaking on the Hunter River

Wyee Creek

Secrets of Wyee Creek revealed.

A trip to Wyee Creek was conducted on the 13th January.

The weather was glorious, perfect paddling conditions. Not too hot, with a slight southerly breeze.

New members Cheryl and Mark Bretag joined us for the trip, as did Pieter Gray and Ron and Carrie Elliott (albeit only until morning tea). It was lovely to have the new members along, as there are a few surprises in this paddle destination.

We started at the Vales Point side of the lake and quickly made it across the shallow waters to the entrance of Wyee Creek. This is where the first surprise is! The entrance to the Creek is via concrete pipes under the road! It's a lot of fun gliding through the pipes with the sunlight on the other side waiting for you.

Its a lovely paddle up the creek, no other boats can get there, and we only saw a few people fishing from private properties. There's a great spot on the branch of the creek where you can get out (carefully, as it can be a little slippery as Cheryl can vouch to). This area has a large clearing which easily accommodates several kayaks so it makes a perfect spot for an energy boost and refreshing beverage.

The creek then opens up to a large flodded low land, which is peppered by dead trees, quite an eerie spot and fun to paddle around.

The creek continues to the right so we continued up this arm for about another 3 kms. It gets narrower and occasionally you have to dodge fallen trees across the creek, but this adds to the fun. The serenity is disturbed at times by the noise from a coal conveyor belt heading to the power station. We paddled as far as we could go, following little arms wherever possible, but make sure you have some mossie repellent!

The return journey was just as enjoyable, with a pleasant breeze making the lake crossing easy. The public grassy reserve made a great spot to sit under the trees for lunch.

All agreed that we would definitely do a return paddle here one day.
